This is why they offer a unique view into how languages form, evolve, and interact. Join the UB Creolist Reading Group if you would like to dive right into these fascinating questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re a linguistics major, a student curious about language contact or a researcher interested in how societies shape communication, this group is a great space to explore big ideas and connect with a like-minded community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-text-subtitle is-style-text-subtitle--1\">What do we explore?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How creole languages emerge and develop<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ongoing influence of lexifier languages (the languages that contribute most of the vocabulary)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cultural, structural and historical contexts of creole-speaking communities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does it work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Creolist Reading Group meets weekly and welcomes participants from across campus and beyond. Sessions alternate between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Research presentations<\/strong>&nbsp;by students, faculty and guest scholars<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collaborative discussions<\/strong>&nbsp;on key readings and emerging topics in the field<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants include UB faculty and graduate students, advanced undergraduates and external researchers with an interest in creole and pidgin languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Join the conversation!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Curious about how languages are born and transformed?
