At the Communication and Assistive Device Lab (CADL), we work with people who use augmentative and assistive communication (AAC) devices to mediate their in-person interactions. Despite their benefits, AAC devices have historically hindered a person’s ability to match the conversational pace of their conversation partners.
Our goal is for augmented speakers to be able to say what they want to say, in the way they want to say it. We are working to incorporate AI to help close that temporal gap by providing augmented speakers with rapid and contextually relevant response choices, from both a content and emotive speech standpoint.
