“Leadership is an action, not a position.”
This quote, attributed to Donald H. McGannon, has stuck with me for years. It challenges the common notion that leadership is reserved for CEOs, managers, or those with vested authority. Instead, it reminds us that true leadership is defined by the courage to step up, the willingness to act, and the determination to make a difference—no matter how small the act or how big the stage.
So, what does it truly mean to lead through action? Let’s explore how ordinary moments can spark extraordinary change.
A Moment of Change: The Power of Leading from Within
Let me tell you a story. In 2022, during the height of ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan, a teenage girl named Aisha defied all odds in her small village. With most men away or injured, and the village schools in disarray, Aisha began teaching younger children basic literacy skills under the shade of a large tree. She wasn’t assigned this role, nor did anyone expect her to assume the position, but her actions soon gained momentum. Other young women joined her, and eventually, even local elders began advocating for a formal school.
What Aisha did wasn’t merely teaching; it was leadership in its purest form. She saw a gap, recognized a need, and acted—not for recognition, but because she believed in the power of education. Her actions echoed throughout her community, transforming not just minds but also attitudes about women and education.
Breaking the Myth
Too often, we equate leadership with power, grand gestures, and high-profile positions. The belief that leadership can only come from those at the top is not only limiting, but it discourages many from stepping up in the first place.
But here’s the truth:
Leadership is not hierarchical. A manager can lack leadership qualities, while a receptionist might demonstrate them every day.
It doesn’t require perfection. Leading is about trying, learning, and adapting—not about having all the answers.
It starts small. The most powerful leaders often emerge in moments when they see a need and step forward, no matter how minor the situation may seem.
Leadership isn’t about doing something big; it’s about doing something meaningful.
Every Action Matters: Leadership in Everyday Life
You don’t need to be a revolutionary figure to have a leadership impact. The beauty of leadership is that it happens in small, everyday acts of help. Whether it’s helping a fellow classmate with a tough project, providing emotional support during a crisis, or mentoring someone who needs guidance, every action matters. The key is recognizing the power of those small moments.
Consider this: You take the time to help a colleague when they’re struggling with studies or sit down and listen to a friend who is going through a tough time. In turn, that colleague or friend may go on to help others, passing on the knowledge and encouragement they received. A ripple forms, spreading through each interaction, creating a network of positive influence that continues to grow.
Call to Action
Here’s the thing: you don’t need a hurricane or a life-altering moment to lead. You can lead in the simplest of ways, starting today:
See a problem? Solve it. Is your team struggling with communication? Organize a meeting. Notice a friend feeling left out? Include them.
Take ownership. Leadership is often about responsibility, not control. Own your actions, and the rest will follow.
Model the behavior you want to see. Whether it’s kindness, perseverance, or focus, embody the values you hope to inspire in others.
“The next time you see an opportunity to step up, remember: leadership is not about being in charge; it’s about taking charge.“
Leadership in action is a choice. It’s the decision to contribute when it’s easier to remain passive, to speak up when silence feels safer, and to act with purpose when no one else will. So, to you, the reader: don’t wait for a title, a role, or permission. Lead in your way, every day. Because when you do, you might just ignite a spark that changes everything—not just for you, but for everyone around you.
