How to Make the Most of Your 11-Month Program

Written by: Yashwanth Penugonda, MS in MIS ’24

The clock is ticking — you only have 11 short months until graduation day arrives. Before you know it, orientation will be a distant memory, and you’ll be walking across the stage to receive your degree. With less than a year to make the most of your UB experience, it’s crucial to have a plan and make every moment count.

Reflecting on my own journey, I see countless ways I could have planned this time better. This unique period, though brief, is filled with opportunities for personal and professional growth. Let me share some insights on how to navigate this pivotal time effectively and make the most of your UB experience.

1. Have a Clear Plan

First and foremost, set clear goals for what you wish to accomplish during your time at UB. Are you aiming to secure a dream internship or job? Want to develop leadership skills? Planning to join a club or sports team? Or is making lifelong friends and expanding your network at the top of your list? Identifying your priorities early on is crucial. Once you have a clear understanding of your objectives, create a strategic roadmap to achieve them. This focused approach will guide your decisions and activities, ensuring that you make the most of the 11 months ahead.

2. Your Resume: A Living Document

Your resume is a living document that evolves alongside your experiences and skills. Treat it that way! Actively seek out opportunities to enrich it — attend career fairs, become a member of professional organizations and engage in projects and roles that showcase your relevant skills and competencies. Each new experience is a chance to add depth to your resume, making it more robust and competitive. Remember, a well-rounded resume reflects a well-rounded individual, so embrace diverse opportunities that UB offers to make your resume stand out.

3. Network, Network, Network

Never underestimate the power of networking. Embrace every chance to connect with its diverse community. Chat with professors, participate in study groups and meet guest speakers. These interactions are more than just formalities, they’re gateways to mentorships, career advice and genuine support. By building lasting relationships you open doors to future internships and job opportunities. So, reach out, ask questions, and engage — one conversation could unlock a world of possibilities.

4. Utilize the Career Resource Center (CRC)

UB’s School of Management has a dedicated Career Resource Center. Make it a point to visit the CRC at least once a month. They can provide invaluable feedback on your resume, guide you in networking strategies and prepare you for interviews. Their insights are tailored to your specific needs and can significantly impact your career trajectory.

5. Balance Work and Academic Priorities

As someone who works on campus, I understand the challenge of juggling academic responsibilities with a job. It’s crucial to balance your present commitments while preparing for your future. Dedicate enough time to both, ensuring that your current job doesn’t overshadow your long-term goals.

With careful planning, a bit of hustle and smart time management, you can truly maximize your short but sweet time at UB. Embrace each moment and challenge, they’re stepping stones to becoming a well-rounded professional. Before you know it, you’ll be walking across the graduation stage, equipped and ready to make your mark in the world.
