  • February: Congratulations to senior BME students and research assistants in AVML, Lucas Davis and Karl Swanson, who, in collaboration with MD\/PhD candidate Zahid Manzar, successfully presented their poster “Developing a patient-specific iPSC endothelial model to investigate stroke-like episodes in MELAS and propose a novel therapy” at the Rare Disease Day event (2\/26\/26) in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo! Well done, Lucas and Karl!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • November: Congratulations to Zahid Manzar for the publication Manzar et al. Biomed Pharmacother. 193 (2025) 118751 that showed the role of depolarized mitochondrial cargo in the ability of endothelial cell-derived large extracellular vesicles to cause dysfunction in recipient endothelial cells!<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Lab members Erik Munoz, PhD candidate, and Karl Swanson, senior undergraduate in BME, and Dr. Alevriadou had a great and productive time at the 2025 Midwest Metabolism\/TRiMAD meeting (November 10-11, 2025) hosted by the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. Our poster on metabolomics of vascular endothelial cells exposed to shear stress was very well received. Congratulations to the meeting organizers for an excellent job!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • July: Dr. Alevriadou<\/span> and Zahid Manzar attended the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Biomechanics in Vascular Biology (July 20-25; Ventura, CA). Two of the conference organizers are shown in the photo, Drs. Tzung Hsiai, UCLA, and Hanjoong Jo, Georgia Tech\/Emory (first on the right and left, respectively) together with Dr. Alevriadou<\/span> and Zahid. Dr. Alevriadou<\/span> had an oral presentation, and Zahid had a poster presentation, both on horizontal mitochondrial transfer via endothelial cell-derived extracellular vesicles. Zahid’s poster was selected one of the 5 best at the GRC, and he received a certificate of recognition. Congratulations, Zahid!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • October : At the annual meeting (October 23-26; Baltimore, MD), Dr. Alevriadou was named a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) for her pioneering cellular and molecular work on vascular endothelial mechanotransduction and mitochondrial redox signaling, and for her service to the Society. Congratulation to Dr. Alevriadou for her induction to the rank of BMES Fellow! \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 At the same meeting, two Lab members Julia Pietromicca (Victor) and Zahid Manzar gave oral presentations.                 • August: Congratulations <\/span>to lab member Zahid Manzar for his newly announced NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein Individual Predoctoral NRSA for MD\/PhD Fellowships (F30) grant award! Zahid\u2019s research is on endothelial-derived extracellular vesicles and their role in vascular manifestations in mitochondrial diseases. The F30 award will support Zahid\u2019s PhD research in the AVML for 2 years and his remaining MD education for 2 years. Many thanks to Dr. Kozicz, MD, PhD, Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, for serving as co-sponsor in Zahid\u2019s F30 fellowship, and the MitoCure Foundation, for funding our lab to investigate the role of the vascular endothelium in mitochondrial diseases.<\/span>

                  • Congratulations to Julia Pietromicca for successfully passing her qualifying exam on 5\/28\/24! Julia was also awarded the competitive Western New York Prosperity Fellowship! Supported by the Prentice Family Foundation, the WNY Prosperity Fellowship provides fellows with professional development opportunities, as well as resources and access to WNY business leaders and the community.<\/li>\n
                  • Dr.\u00a0Alevriadou<\/span>\u00a0delivered the keynote research talk titled \u201cHorizontal Mitochondrial Transfer from Endothelial Cells under Mechanochemical Stress\u201d at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of Rochester Medical Center, annual retreat on March 11, 2024. The retreat was a big success attended by almost 100 faculty and students. Thank you to the faculty organizers Drs. Paul Brookes, Alan Grossfield, and Joseph Wedekind, and the staff (Thank you, Stephanie!) and students Maddie and Emily.
