Welcome to the Buffalo Babylab!

By the time they reach the preschool period, most children speak in full sentences, and the building blocks of this skill are in place long before that. In the Buffalo Babylab, we examine how children accomplish this. How do infants and toddlers learn to recognize words from fluent speech? How do they learn to process the relationships between words in a sentence? And how do they learn to comprehend language despite all of the variation among speakers? To answer these questions, we use a variety of non-intrusive procedures that allow us to establish infants’ and toddlers’ language processing even when they don’t talk. Participation is fun for children and helps us reveal how language is being acquired so rapidly!
