The Western New York Genetics in Research and Health Care Partnership, funded by a Science Education Partnership Award<\/a> from the NIH, \u00a0will develop an ongoing partnership with disadvantaged schools across a 14-county region that will serve as a pipeline for teacher and student recruitment, training and mentorship in bioscience, with a particular focus on genetics. It is designed to support career paths for students in both scientific research and the health professions, emphasizing assistance to those from underrepresented and disadvantaged groups, as well as to familiarize teachers with basic bioinformatics concepts that they can introduce into their classrooms.<\/div>\n

The STEM-related goals of the project are to:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. allow high school students and teachers to participate in scientific research<\/li>\n
  2. stimulate the interest of students in pursuing careers in science and technology through the use of a unique, interactive learning environment combined with intensive support intervention and<\/li>\n
  3. encourage teachers to include bioinformatics and genomics in their curriculum.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Microbial Genome Annotation Network (MGAN)<\/strong> The Microbial Genome Annotation Network (MGAN)<\/a> is a partnership between academic institutions across the U.S. and the Department of Energy’s Joint Genome Institute to provide undergraduates with a contemporary and inexpensive authentic research experience in microbial genome annotation and comparative analysis. The Western NY Genetics in Research and Health Care Partnership is one of a number of groups using GENI-ACT to annotate microbial genomes at the high school, undergraduate and graduate level.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
