Youth participate in recreation while also learning independent living skills.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/swfield\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/01\/20140119-071707.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/swfield\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/01\/20140119-071707.jpg\" alt=\"20140119-071707.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arriving at Keystone<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Republic of Moldova is a country\u00a0that is experiencing\u00a0\u00a0ongoing\u00a0political and economic transition.\u00a0\u00a0In the midst of this,\u00a0our\u00a0group found\u00a0social service\u00a0organizations\u00a0working hard here for change on behalf of vulnerable and marginalized populations.\u00a0Two examples are\u00a0Motivatie and Keystone Moldova.\u00a0\u00a0Before describing their services, consider the following context:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to the Every Child Moldova Report (20013), as recently as 10 years ago the only option for a child who had to leave their parents was life in an institution.\u00a0 1.3% of all Moldova children went into institutions and stayed an average of 7-8 years.\u00a0 Until very recently,\u00a0community level services for individuals with disabilities were not available.<\/li>\n<li>Social inclusion of people with disabilities in Moldova is urgently needed according to the United Nations (See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=45847&amp;Cr=moldova&amp;Cr1=#.UtrO648o5y0\">http:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=45847&amp;Cr=moldova&amp;Cr1=#.UtrO648o5y0<\/a>), and Moldova must make progress in order to meet it&#8217;s own national goals, as well as international and EU standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a title=\"Keystone Moldova\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalmentalhealth.org\/resources\/keystone-human-services-international-moldova-association\" target=\"_blank\">Keystone Moldova<\/a>,\u00a0an organization under the umbrella of Keystone International, has\u00a0been working for\u00a0social inclusion since it&#8217;s inception in 2003, and has been\u00a0working\u00a0to\u00a0transform\u00a0systems of care for children and their families.\u00a0\u00a0They have helped to develop guidelines for\u00a0inclusive schools and participated in the crafting of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.\u00a0\u00a0See <a title=\"Paradigm Shift in Moldova\" href=\"http:\/\/khsima.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/10\/paradigm-shift-in-moldova-implementing-the-un-convention-on-the-rights-of-persons-with-disabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paradigm Shift in Moldova<\/a>.\u00a0 The agency has also worked to empower children and families through the use of story telling and narrative therapy, and other creative approaches.\u00a0\u00a0Social enterprise programs and community homes have also been developed.<\/p>\n<p>Another NGO, <a title=\"Motivatie Moldova\" href=\"http:\/\/www.motivatie.md\/en\/partners\/13-date-generale.html\" target=\"_blank\">Motivatie Moldova<\/a>, is\u00a0working to support the social integration of children with physical disabilities and promoting their rights.\u00a0 The organization is involved in education and awareness programs\u00a0throughout Moldova. For example, their team of basketball players show off their skills from their wheelchairs prior to major sporting events.
